Mortice locks or "chubb" locks as they are often called provide a great level of security.
Normally they are used in conjunction with a nightlatch rim cylinder on wooden doors.
If the mortice lock is fitted with a handle it is referred to as a sash lock.
Not all mortice and sash locks are insurance rated and they come in various sizes and with different levels of security.
On internal doors a 2 or 3 lever locks are normally sufficient in most
situations. If extra security is required then a 5 lever lock will
suffice.
External doors normally are required to have locks fitted that are
rated to British Standard BS 3621. This what most insurance companies
require and the lock will have a kite mark to show it is to this
standard.

Another type of mortice lock is a lock that consists of a
lock case and seperate cylinder together known as a euro deadcase.
These types of locks are common in office buildings as they allow for the use of master systems and easy lock changes.
These
locks are also being used more and more on new build developments as
when fitted with a thumbturn cylinder they allow easy escape in the
event of a fire.
Another advantage of these types of locks is that you only have to carry a smaller key on your keyring.
It is also possible to make both the top and bottom cylinders use the same keys for convenience.
