Cylinder Locks | Print |

Rim Cylinder locks, quite often referred to as yale locks, are fitted to most wooden doors in the uk.A lot of householders still oA standard Yale Nightlatch found on many homes todaynly have this type of lock protecting their front door.
Although it is an extremely easy to use lock it many cases it does offer poor
security in todays society.

Unless you have a rim cylinder lock that is insurance approved to bs3621 you need to get an additional lock fitted to protect your property.

Even if you have an insurance approved lock fitted we still recommend getting an additional mortice lock fitted.

When considering a new nightlatch try to get one with a deadlock function or double locking facility. A deadlock type cannot be opened with the technique often shown in films as the credit card trick or slipping the latch.A double locked nightlatch means it cannot be opened at all from the inside. This is useful if a window is fitted to the door and prevents the glass being smashed to reach in and open the door. The downside of this is that it is possible to get locked in the property with no way of unlocking the door from inside.

A Yale insurance approved nightlatch
Insurance approved nightlatches are generally a
lot bigger and stronger locks. The offer a fair bit of protection on their own but form a formidable defence if used in conjuction with a mortice lock (chubb type lock).

Changing a cylinder on a nightlatch can be done without having to have a complete new latch part of the lock. Some of the insurance approved locks are harder to change the cylinders on due to the lack of availability of the parts
required. Our locksmiths can advise of what exactly it is you need.

Another type of nightlatch is the roller bolt type. These are quite common on new build properties as they help developers conform with building regulations regarding the disability act.
These do not "latch" automatically and require you to "throw" the bolt on entry or exit.
The main advantage is it is harder to get locked out because the door closed behind you or slammed shut.

Again changing the cylinders on these typesRoller Bolt type yale nightlatch rim cylinder
of locks is straight forward and something we at all locked up can do for you.

Overall these types of locks require little maintenance but if the lock is getting "loose" or the snib ( the little knob that holds back the latch) is getting loose then you need to give us a call to sort it out.

If your lock has these symptoms there is a good chance that you could get locked out ! Call an all locked up locksmith to sort out any problems you may have.
